From Foster Care to Fierce Advocate: How Michaela Guthrie Is Helping Young Adults Rewrite Their Stories

Some of the most powerful leaders are those who have walked the very road they now help others navigate.

For Bloom Beyond Director Michaela Guthrie, supporting young adults aging out of foster care isn’t just a job; it’s deeply personal.

As a child, Michaela experienced foster care herself. She understands the uncertainty, the challenges, and the questions that come with growing up in the system. She also knows the difference one caring adult, one opportunity, or one moment of encouragement can make.

Today, she’s using those experiences to ensure that young adults leaving foster care don’t have to face adulthood alone.

As Director of Bloom Beyond, Michaela leads Bloom’s Transitional Aged Youth program, which serves young adults ages 18–26 as they navigate life after foster care. Through individualized support, life skills training, career development, education, housing assistance, and mentorship, Bloom Beyond equips participants with the tools and confidence they need to build independent, successful lives.

Her work is a powerful reminder that a person’s past does not define their future.

Recently, Michaela shared her story as part of the Stories by Us campaign through the Be the People initiative, a national storytelling project highlighting everyday Americans who are transforming their own life experiences into acts of service for others.

“We are so proud of Michaela for courageously sharing her journey,” said Bloom President & CEO Becky Davenport. “Her story is one of resilience and the incredible impact one person can have when they choose to use their journey to help others.”

Every day, Michaela sits across from young adults who are facing many of the same fears she once experienced. She reminds them that they are capable, worthy, and never beyond hope. Because she’s lived it, they know they’re talking to someone who truly understands.

That authenticity is at the heart of Bloom Beyond.

Rather than simply helping young adults meet immediate needs, the program walks beside them as they pursue education, employment, stable housing, financial independence, and lifelong success. It’s about creating lasting relationships and ensuring every young adult has someone in their corner.

Because of leaders like Michaela, more young adults aging out of foster care are discovering that their future can be brighter than they ever imagined.

We hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch her inspiring story and help us celebrate the incredible impact she’s making every day. Visit: https://www.storiesbyus.org/story/view/jbE5P.
